Moulin Rouge, Sydney

A "secret" gig at the Moulin Rouge, Sydney.

Claire contributes this from the forums:

it was almost a religious experience... very intimate setting with decor that reminded me a little bit of the spiegeltent (no wonder they chose it)

unfortunately most of my friends bailed on me with a "sorry, but it's a monday night" excuse - PAH! so there were 4 of us, and not many more than 120 all up!

They played some great new songs (some of which they'd never performed live before):
- a voodoo cowboy somg from harry
- a song from felix that made alot of us cry - can't remember the name of it... something latin to do with churchbells... then he followed it up with an austrian waltz which was a cack!
- there was another dose of that beautiful lost song duet...
... and many more!

perhaps the highlight of the evening was when there were about 30-40 people left (incl the band) - and there was a sponatneous daggy song/jazz standard sing-a-long. It was started by Julie O'Hara and Kieran and Ross (empire horn boys) singing a jazz song (the name of which has slipped my mind)... then harry got up and sang "Please forgive me" - Bryan Adams... and it went downhill from there - hours of fun!

The Metro, Sydney

Excellent support from Byron Bay trio 'SKIN' who really got the crowd into the groove.

Not sure of the exact setlist, but tracks included
'Hello'
'The Chariot'
'Beanni'
'Manifesto'
'Days like These'
'The Wine Song'
'How to Explain?'
'Nothing'
'The Crowd'
'One, Four, Five'
'The Rhythm'
'All that Talking'
'Wandering'
'Song for the Day' (Ollie's groovin)
'Two Shoes'

The highlight for me was the beautiful duet Harry and Julie O'Hara (aka skat girl) performed of 'The Lost Song'. Spine-tingling stuff!!

We were also fortunate to witness the amazing talents of Richard and Johnny Tedesco - flamenco dancer and guitarist extraordinaire. I have never seen the entire Metro silenced. By anything. But this flamenco dancer's feet did the trick.

Welcome to these rhymes
that be going on and on
Welcome to the Empire
and the funky Empire tunes...

[EDIT: later that week I discovered that amazing skat girl's identity to be none other than the fabulous Miss Julie O'Hara].

From Emma in the forums:

"They did a second show on the sunday the 7th on the main stage. The crowd was even bigger then the first (word had got around about friday). The highlight would have been jumps and felix's dancing."

WOMADelaide, Adelaide

From Emma in the forums:

"The first was on the friday night (5th March), great start to the weekend. They played on stage 2 and started a bit late so the crowd very very ready for them. It was very squishy for an outdoors show and hard to dance. Highlight would just be the energy from the band ."
