Secret Gig, Bennetts Lane

Last night, Melbourne forgot how to keep a secret...

secret (adj): Kept hidden from knowledge or view; concealed.

Much has been made of The Cat Empire's famed 'secret gigs', where the band plays to small crowds and jams all night. Last night, Melbourne forgot how to keep a secret. The line to get into Bennetts Lane Jazz Club stretched half way down the road, and people were being turned away at the door.

The amount of people, combined with the number of shows the boys have done equalled a gig that while still great by normal standards, lacked the X-factor we've all come to love and expect from The Cat Empire.

Again, as with last week's sold-out ticketed gig, (there were definately more people there last night) plenty of new songs featured... The Lullaby and Protons Neutrons Electors are fast becoming crowd favourites!
The night also saw Ryan do a rare and long overdue bass solo in Days Like These, Felix play a driving conga solo in In My Pocket (and have his voice break in The Rhythm) and Ollie mystify the crowd with a couple of solos that were so melodic and un-Ollie, yet still amazing (would you expect anything less?) Harry brushed up on his French for Hotel Calfornia, and, once again, the crowd were left motionless in The Miserere.

While you're always guarenteed a great night at a Cat Empire gig, I wonder whether all the touring is taking it's toll... but let's keep that a secret between you and me, okay?

The setlist is available in the gigography entry for this gig.
