After waiting for like, a year to see the band, I was having feelings of nervous anticipation on Friday. I was lucky enough to get tickets for Sunday's show too (greedy? Moi?), so I knew that if I passed out I would get another chance to see 'em.
Anyway, support was a DJ (I guess any other band would look pretty shit next to TCE) and the atmosphere was buzzing, and very Australian. I felt like I was back in Oz, everyone I overheard had an accent.
I was pretty drunk by the time they came on stage and stayed near the back, dancing. It all went by so quickly, but they blew me away and I have to say I have never experienced anything like that before! I was particularly impressed by Harry's trumpet skills, a true star for someone so young. Will's drumming was crazy, his solo during 'Hello' seemed to go on and on. I didn't check Felix out proper until Sunday night's gig, and yes he is handsome and a good dancer, but the member I think is the coolest has got to be Ollie - what a demon on the keyboards! He looks so laid back and I just love the way he wears his cap at that jaunty angle...
This is probably the best live act I may get to see, not only because of the talents of the six guys, but the audience so obviously love them and show it. The reactions they get from the crowd really make the gigs exciting. Clapping, jumping and foot stomping - it's definately exhausting, but worth it. Also, everyone is in such a good mood that it's really easy to meet people and chat and dance; and spilling beer on the person in front is OK.
One complaint - The acoustics at The Carling Academy weren't great. I couldn't hear a word the boys were saying between songs, but on Sunday I went near the front and it was much better.
It makes a change from a lot of the pretentious poseurs of many British bands that I have enjoyed watching, but not really felt any real sense of fun from being there. At a Cat Empire show you are part of a big celebration of the love of music.
