The Empire boys played their biggest WA show at Metropolis Fremantle on Friday night, to a fairly full but slightly restless crowd. We got our first taste of Skaddabox, who played a good long set (50min?) of their tunes and got a great response from the crowd. I was a bit worried that no one would turn up early for their set being an unknown band here, but thankfully I was wrong, and it didnt take them long to warm up a new crowd.
When The Cat Empire took the stage and started into 'The Sun' there was something awkward about the group, and I think the crowd picked up on it quickly. They might have been fighting or were just a bit tired, and unfortunately it took most of the set for them to get up to their usual joyfulness. It was great to see the horns here in Perth for the second time though, and they really know how to have fun on stage.
The set consisted of all the regular album songs plus 'In My Pocket' (with an improved arrangement from last time I heard it, sounding even better!), and 3 new tracks which I think they're playing at all gigs this tour.
I didnt catch the names of any, but one Felix refers to as a "soul" track, and the other two have a sort of 50s rock'n'roll feel to them.
